Divisional Specialized Programs

Ridgeview Rides Instructor

I am the riding instructor at Ridgeview Central School in La Crete where I run a very cool program called Ridgeview Rides. This is unique to Ridgeview, La Crete, the Fort Vermilion School Division and is not found just anywhere. During students' time in Ridgeview Rides they will spend 10 weeks learning safety, horse care and riding skills with their lesson horse. I also work with the Student Wellness team in the division to offer Equine Assisted Learning sessions to aid and guide students through the power of the horses and their natural instincts.

Rockyacres Farm

The Rockyacres Farm School provides an amazing opportunity for hands on learning to students from kindergarten to grade 12 in a variety of ways.

We have touched on counting and math skills while planting seeds, looked at how different one variety of seed can be from another and why that might be, built benches, fixed fences, milked goats, fed and cared for cattle, collected eggs from chickens, quail and ducks, cuddled barn cats, harvested and tasted new herbs and veggies from the greenhouse and cooked bannock and berry jam with wild mint tea over an open fire.

There are also many physical and social aspects to the Rocky Acres program.

Students enhance empathy and compassion while caring for the farm animals in safe trusting relationships. They are physically active in all types of weather while completing barn chores, walks and wildcrafting and accessing the adjacent cross country ski trails and sledding hill through the Rockylane Agricultural Society.

For older students, the Farm offers an opportunity to complete high school agriculture credits in courses such as animal husbandry, landscape design and farm safety, as well as providing a first hand glimpse into career options connected to agriculture.

Rockylane students enjoy hosting neighboring schools within the Fort Vermilion School District to come out and visit the farm, meet with the animals, try roping and taking a turn through a hay maize.

I feel very grateful to be part of such an innovative educational program.
